Chemist Position - Sherwin Williams Company

Chemist (Heavy Equipment) in Chicago, IL Position Type: Full Time


Position Responsibilities:This position is accountable for the solution of complex problems and providing timely and accurate support to help resolve various issues and support existing and new product development issues and analysis within the Heavy Equipment (HE) Lab. This position functions with limited supervision and is able to independently design experiments with limited to no review.

Responsibilities for the Chemist (HE) include the following:

  • Resolves complex problems, contributes to the development of new products/processes and maintenance/improvement of existing products/processes.
  • Selects approach, designs, execution, and analysis of experiments and applies results in solution of complex problems.
  • Develops technical expertise. Recognizes importance of internal and external customers and plays vital role in product scale-ups and customer trials
  • Displays growing ability to apply technical expertise, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Increasingly manages own work through planning, execution, analysis, documentation, and application of results.
  • Develops greater understanding of processes by which results are produced. Generates sound data and conclusions, suggests improvements in testing, processes, product line maintenance.
  • Operates under sustained to moderate supervision.
  • Direct informational contacts with other functions (manufacturing, marketing, suppliers, customers.)
  • Plans (resource needs), schedules, execute work, analyze and apply results in solution of complex problems.
  • Fully understands processes by which results are produced. Consistently produces quality work. Strives for improvement in all aspects of the work.
  • May be required to help train and/or direct, check work of lower level professionals.
  • Takes responsibility for ensuring safe operating procedures.

Experience Required:

  • 2 – 4 or more years experience in laboratory environment
  • 2 – 4 or more years of Heavy Equipment knowledge and experience
  • 2 – 4 or more years of hands-on experience developing waterborne and solvent borne industrial paints Formulation and/or knowledge of various paint spray techniques application equipment experience
  • 2 - 4 or more years of hands-on experience performing paint related tests as per American Society for Testing (ASTM) or ISO standards
  • 2 – 4 or more years lab experience in and understanding of corrosion science
  • 2 – 4 or more years lab experience in and understanding of Industrial Coatings and Metal Pre-treatments
  • 2 – 4 or more years of lab experience in and understanding of OEM specifications
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work all scheduled hours as needed and must have a valid driver’s license.
  • If a usage of employee’s own vehicle is required, employee must obtain appropriate insurance as defined by Corporate Policy.

Desired Skills:

  • Waterborne resins knowledge
  • Solvent borne resins knowledge
  • Pigments, extenders and their applications to achieve optimal value
  • Knowledge and or experience of using DOE (Design of experiments) for product development
  • Wood or Plastic knowledge
  • Pigment clear finishes knowledge
  • Stain knowledge

Education Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Science or Chemical Engineering; or Bachelors Degree in Science with 2 semesters of General Chemistry and 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry
