EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM COORDINATOR:  Joint appointment with Office of National Fellowships and Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research

University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH

Job Description: Position will partner with the University of New Hampshire’s Office of National Fellowships, which supports undergraduates, recent alumni, and graduate students (50%), and the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research (50%), which provides resources and support for undergraduates conducting independent research.

The primary responsibilities for this position include: providing comprehensive advising support to undergraduate and graduate students and recent alumni from all colleges in identifying and applying for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships; and independently managing the university-wide Undergraduate Research Conference through which students from across all colleges in the university present research, scholarly, and creative projects.

Secondary responsibilities include advising students on how to utilize University and external resources to develop a challenging and dynamic academic and professional trajectory.

Approximately 50% of the appointment is dedicated to the work of the Office of National Fellowships. The position provides guidance and advising to students who are preparing to apply to prestigious national and international scholarship and fellowship opportunities. This position will independently administer a discrete suite of assigned scholarship opportunities and will be responsible for autonomously creating and implementing a recruiting and development strategy to identify applicants and support them through the application process.

This support requires assessing student interests, strengths, potential, and professional trajectory and advising students on identifying and preparing for relevant fellowship opportunities. This individual will independently facilitate workshops and information sessions to explain to students the benefits derived from and the value of the scholarship application process, specific eligibility requirements, and factors that influence competitiveness; and assist students through the scholarship application process by providing critical feedback on application essays, personal statements and research proposals. This editorial support will involve pre-writing consultations about writing genres, content choice, and how to emphasize fit between the applicant’s skill set and the scholarship criteria; close reading of application materials; and feedback about organization, background, project feasibility, key questions, hypothesis development, methodology, and resources; and in-depth discussion of strategies for highlighting the applicant’s strengths, skills, and qualifications. Excellent writing and editing skills are necessary.

For the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research (50%), this position will supervise the planning, organization, publicizing, and administration of the annual, University-wide Undergraduate Research Conference (URC), a two-week spring event showcasing students’ research, scholarly, and creative projects in over 20 professional and artistic venues at UNH’s Durham and Manchester campuses. This individual will develop the URC calendar; schedule, plan and facilitate the URC Planning Committee meetings; serve as a liaison between event coordinators and campus units; develop and implement an advertising and promotion campaign in collaboration with UNH’s office of Communications and Public Affairs (CPA); work with CPA to design, proof and produce the 60-page program booklet; assume responsibility for all logistical aspects of planning and implementing the multi-disciplinary All Colleges Undergraduate Research Symposium; maintain and update the URC website; monitor the URC registration portal; maintain the URC registration database; compile event participation data for analysis and evaluation of URC events; and engage in quality improvements of the URC.
