Assistant Professor of Chemistry

 

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown invites applications for a tenure stream, full-time, teaching and research position in Biochemistry at the Assistant Professor level. Responsibilities:

Teaching duties include lower and upper level chemistry courses, particularly two-term biochemistry with labs, upper level course(s) in the applicant’s area of expertise, and general chemistry. The biochemistry sequence serves a diverse group of students including biology, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, and pre-professional majors. New faculty will contribute to departmental teaching requirements and responsibilities at all levels. The abilities to develop a general education course for non-science majors, and to develop term-wide speaking or writing modules, are desirable. Other responsibilities include maintaining currency in one’s area of expertise, establishing an active research program involving undergraduates, student advising, and service to the Chemistry Department and to the University. The successful candidate will also coordinate the Biochemistry Program.

 

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field (completed by time of hire) with evidence of a strong grounding in both chemistry and biochemistry; demonstrated commitment to teaching and research at a primarily undergraduate institution; evidence of experience with modern instrumentation as employed in biochemistry; excellence in oral and written communication. The ability to teach biochemistry and general chemistry should be documented by at least one of the following: letter of reference, peer review of teaching, student evaluations, or teaching awards.

Starting Date:  August 2018

Application package will include: (1) Letter of application, (2) current curriculum vita, (3) statement of teaching philosophy, (4) plans for professional development including undergraduate research plans with required equipment and facilities, (5) evidence of quality teaching, (6) undergraduate and graduate transcripts (copies will suffice for initial screening), (7) statement of eligibility for employment in the United States (if not a US citizen or a permanent resident), and (8) three current and relevant letters of recommendation (electronic letters will suffice for initial screening). Successful candidates must provide official transcripts and three hard-copy letters of recommendation.
