Job Role Summary

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company has an immediate opening for a Member of the Technical Staff in the area of polymer chemistry at its Corporate Strategic Research laboratory in Clinton, New Jersey. The successful candidate will have a broad background in polymer science with core expertise in polymer synthesis.  The candidate should be well-versed in polymer synthesis techniques, molecular characterization of polymers and the determination of polymer physical and mechanical properties. 

Job Role Responsibilities

The researcher will:

  • Expand ExxonMobil’s knowledge-base in synthetic polymer chemistry
  • Synthesize and functionalize polymers in order to enable new hydrocarbon-based materials
  • Test structure-property hypotheses by preparing and characterizing polymeric materials 
  • Characterize polymers and  determine the  polymer physical and mechanical properties 
  • Make substantial individual and collaborative contributions within multi-disciplinary, cross-functional teams.

Expected Level of Proficiency

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry, or a related field such as Polymer Science, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering with a strong chemistry background
  • A track record of high-impact, first-author publications and presentations.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Post-doctoral research experience is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with coordination-insertion, anionic, cationic, or ring opening polymerization is desirable.
  • Additional experience in a related field, such as polymerization kinetics, polymer thermodynamics, or polymerization unit operations is preferred.
