DUTIES:

We are looking for a motivated Polymer Chemist/ Scientist with expertise in polymeric materials as it applies to space applications.  The individual we’re seeking will also have expertise in polymer physics and characterization (and/or similar areas) with a strong emphasis on nanoscale phenomena such as polymer adhesion and other surface science phenomena.  The successful candidate must be able to function in a laboratory environment, while also interfacing with customers to provide technical advice. Primary duties are the following: (a) evaluate and characterize polymer performance behavior; (b) define new space materials and processes associated with their manufacture and (c) develop new polymeric-base materials through manipulation of polymer structure property relationships.  Responsibilities include research on internally or externally funded programs and providing technical support to Department of Defense (DoD) and non-DoD customers. An ability to travel and participate in field operations is important, as are a willingness to learn and flexibility with respect to task assignment. The position requires the applicant to be a self-motivated and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with customers, management, and co-workers both orally and in writing are a requirement.  The successful applicant will be expected to give technical presentations, publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, write internal reports, and prepare research and test proposals. The candidate will also need to manage multiple projects and must also explain highly technical information in a very easily understandable manner. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Materials Science or Polymer Science, Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university.  At least 2 years of experience, structure-property relationships, polymer physics, characterization, mechanics of materials, with knowledge of equipment and instruments of a typical polymer or composites laboratory are required.  Industrial experience and knowledge of space resin / adhesives is a plus.  Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical personnel via oral and written forms are essential. Must be able to obtain/maintain DoD Secret clearance.  MUST BE A US CITIZEN.
